The Student Sponsorship Programme will be opened its scholarship applications on 1st June 2015. SSP which recently celebrated 15 years of existence identifies academically distinguished and financially disadvantaged scholars and enables them to excel at some of the best top performing schools in South Africa. High potential grade 6 scholars in Gauteng and Eastern Cape are invited to submit application from 1 June 2015 to 31 August 2015.
SSP visits primary schools and community centres in townships to introduce the programme to the principals, teachers and the community. The aim of the visits is to encourage and inform the communities about the opportunities that lie ahead for the distinguished scholars.
In order for applications to be considered, the applicants must adhere to the criteria below:
- Scholar must be in grade 6
- Not older than 12 years of age at the time of application
- Overall average of 70% or more in grade 5
- 70% minimum grade for Mathematics, English and Science
- They must demonstrate a financial need- less than R16 000.00 combined monthly family income
- Leadership potential
- Community – service orientated.
Over 800 scholars have benefited from the programme and many more have been impacted by the scholar development programme. SSP does not only develop the scholars, but provides support to the parents thereby impacting the whole community. SSP scholars grow to become leaders in their schools, not just in academics but also in student governance, cultural, sports and community.
The application process for the programme opens in June every year and will close on 31 August 2015. Forms will be made available on the SSP’s website at www.ssp.org.za. Forms will also be placed at libraries and schools around Gauteng.
